Mouth
Guards
Dental injuries are the
most common type of injuries sustained during sports
activities. Thus, it is of great importance to protect
your (or your child's) mouth during these activities. The
ADA estimates that over 200,000 oral injuries are prevented annually
through the use of sports mouth guards.
Although any mouth guard
will be a positive step towards safer play, stock or boil and
bite type mouth guards, often found in sporting goods stores, do
present some problems. They often do not achieve an
accurate fit, and can be uncomfortable and interfere with the
athlete's ability to breathe and speak. They also provide
a false sense of protection; when the athlete bites the guard
into its form during its softened state, the thickness at the
point of contact is greatly decreased, robbing the guard of its
protective ability. For
those who play sports, a custom fitted mouth guard is an
important part of preventative dental care. It is a small
investment that will prevent future costs associated with
extensive restoration of injured teeth, protecting the life,
health, and integrity of your smile. |
