Fillings
Direct
restorations are fillings that we place into a prepared cavity
in a single visit. This
type of restoration includes dental amalgam and composite
(resin) fillings.
Amalgam
Fillings
Dental amalgam, used in what is commonly referred to as a
‘silver filling’, is a compound of mercury and other metals.
It has been successfully and safely used for over a
century; although some concerns have been raised about its
mercury content, the mercury in amalgam chemically combines with
other metals to render it stable and safe.
Amalgams are useful for their strength and durability,
and can be especially beneficial in situations where restored
teeth must withstand extreme amounts of pressure, most notably
in the back of the mouth.
Composite
Fillings
Composite fillings are a mixture of acrylic resin and finely
ground glasslike particles.
This combination produces a tooth-colored restoration. These fillings are durable in small to mid-sized
restorations, withstanding moderate chewing pressure.
Composite fillings require the removal of less tooth
structure, which can result in smaller fillings.
We
can help you decide what type of filling will be best for you. Regardless of the type, it will be to your advantage to have
decayed teeth restored as soon as possible; if left untreated,
they may require more extensive treatment, including crowns and
extractions. Of
course, your best defense against dental decay is good oral
hygiene coupled with regular dental examinations and hygiene
visits. |
