Wisdom
Teeth
Wisdom teeth can be valuable when they are healthy
and properly aligned. However, they are susceptible to problems
that require their removal. When the jaw isn't large enough to
accommodate wisdom teeth, they can become impacted. Wisdom teeth
may grow sideways, emerge only part way from the gum, or remain
trapped beneath the gum and bone.
They can often cause crowding, compromising the proper
alignment and health of the rest of your teeth.
It is
generally a good idea to have wisdom teeth removed when they
only partially erupt. This leaves an opening for bacteria to
enter around the tooth and cause an infection, which can lead to
pain, swelling, and stiffness.
Poorly
aligned wisdom teeth can also damage adjacent teeth.
