Cavities (Tooth Decay)

Tooth decay is the destruction of the tooth enamel, and is caused by the continued presence of carbohydrates on the teeth.  Bacteria in the mouth thrive on these substances, which produces acid.  These acids eventually destroy the tooth enamel, resulting in decay.

You can help to prevent tooth decay by bruising twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and eating balanced meals supplemented by little snacking.  Dental sealants serve as good protection against decay in the molars, and a supplemental fluoride can be helpful to some.  Professional hygiene visits and regular examinations will help to stop decay before it starts, and detect any decay quickly, before it spreads.
