Thumb
sucking Thumb
sucking can be especially comforting for babies, and is not
really a problem until age five. After this age, thumb
sucking can not only be socially problematic, but it can also
lead to the deformation of the palate and misalignment of the
teeth. With
some effort, its generally easy for young children to make the
transition from thumb sucking. Try gently and consistently
to make your child aware of her or his habit. If this does
not prevent its escalation, try a simple reminder, such as a
special ring on the thumb sucking hand. If
such efforts prove to be ineffective, your child's dentist can
make a special appliance for him or her to wear that discourages
the habit. If you encounter any problems, be sure to speak
with your child's dentist about different strategies that might
work best for you.
