Teeth Whitening

Frequently Asked Questions

What is tooth whitening?
Its a process that lightens the discoloration of enamel and dentin using a mild bleaching solution retained in a custom-fitted tray that you wear over your teeth.

What causes tooth discoloration?
Although there are many causes, the most common include aging, staining substances such as tea, coffee, tobacco, and soda, trauma, nerve degeneration, and old restorations.  During tooth formation in childhood, the consumption of tetracycline or excessive fluoride may also be a contributing factor.

Who can benefit from tooth whitening?
Almost anyone.  However, different people respond differently to the treatment, and results do vary from person to person.  We can determine if you are a viable candidate for the process through an oral examination and diagnosis.

How does whitening work?
The gel is placed in a thin bleaching tray that fits over your teeth.  As hydrogen peroxide, the active ingredient in the gel, is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin and bleaches the colored substances.  Only the tooth color is made lighter; the structure of the tooth remains unchanged.

Is the process safe?
Yes. Research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe for the teeth and gums.  In face, many dentists consider this on of the simplest, safest cosmetic procedures available.

Are there any side effects?
Some people experience temporary tooth sensitivity during their treatment.  These symptoms disappear within 1-3 days after the interruption or completion of treatment.

How long do the results last?
The teeth will always be lighter than they were.  However, just as with unbleached teeth, additional staining may occur depending on personal habits, and some patients may want to touch up their teeth by re-whitening for one or two days once or twice a year.
